What is now Bank of the West has expanded over 130 years from the California frontier to its current position. The bank now serves nearly 4 million households and businesses in hundreds of communities in 19 Western and Midwestern states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Founded in 1874 as Farmers National Gold Bank, Bank of the West is one of the oldest financial institutions. Following a name change in 1880, First National Bank of San Jose operated for a century before becoming Bank of the West in 1979, with a network of nearly 40 Bay Area branches.
Bank of the West strengthened its position as northern California's super-community bank in the 1990s with a series of institution and branch acquisitions. In 1997, the Bank also acquired Essex Credit Corporation, the largest direct lender in the U.S. marine industry.
Bank of the West merged with Honolulu-based First Hawaiian Bank in late 1998, forming a new holding company, BancWest Corporation, which preserved both brands. Bank of the West also expanded into Oregon, Washington and Idaho, absorbing Pacific One Bank, a former First Hawaiian subsidiary.
